Early years of
'Paki bashing' in Brick Lane

Mahmud
Rauf, the President of Brick Lane Business Association tells
the story of the development of Brick Lane as London's prime
curry spot. A resident of Brick Lane since 1968, he says the
early immigrants had to face what was then called 'Paki
bashing'. Racial abuse was rampant and physical violence quite
common. They formed Brick Lane Business Association to fight
against this harassment.

Curry
is not Indian, it's Bangladeshi

Abdul
Rab came to live in Brick Lane in 1964 when he was just seven.
He says once Bangladeshi immigrants began to arrive local
white people began to leave Brick Lane. Earlier there were
many Sari shops and slowly they were replaced by restaurants.
He argues curry is, in fact, Bangladeshi rather than Indian.
According to him higher lease rents are killing the businesses
in Brick Lane.
