The villagers in Sholapur, Maharashtra believe that this
ritual makes the child physically strong and frees them
from disease and evil spirits. But the recent TV coverage
of this custom forced India's women and child development
minister Krishna Tirath to promise action against such
superstition. National Commission for Protection of Child
Rights (NCPCR) says they have issued a notice to the
Sholapur district magistrate as well as Maharashtra
government.
